We set out to create a Natural Deodorant for everybody, but we ended up with a flexible formula so that there's something unique for for every body!

How did we get here- and how DOES our Custom Deo even work- you may be asking?

Well, if you've read our previous blog posts about how Bad B.O is caused by bacteria, which eats the fat found in your pit sweat to create B.O. (gross, but true!)- then you know Natural Deodorant's "work" by reducing that bacteria!

... while absorbing excess moisture and covering up residual odor too. Without causing your pits to break out in hives!

So, Natural deodorant formula's have to do all that, while eliminating any unnecessary ingredients and keeping it 100% natural.

Not all formula's solve these problems in the same way, so we thought we'd share how our formula *actually* works. Keep reading!

OUR ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Firstly, our Natural Deodorant formula works to block odor with our trio of naturally derived “actives":

Our Actives: Zinc Ricinoleate, Magnesium Hydroxide and Arrowroot Powder!

Instead of using baking soda- a common irritant- we opted for Magnesium Hydroxide as our main odor-blocking ingredient. It works to change the PH of your skin, thereby killing the natural odor-causing bacteria.

For our Odor Control deodorant, we use a high percentage of Magnesium Hydroxide to ensure maximum odor coverage.

 

For our Sensitive Skin Custom Deodorant, we took the percentage of Magnesium Hydroxide down (as it has a high PH that can cause itchiness), and instead upped the percentage of Arrowroot Powder, a very gentle natural ingredient known & used for centuries to control odor. We also added a de-sensitizing agent, Allantoin- to help soothe your skin in case it is hyper sensitive to PH changes.

OUR SWEAT ABSORBING INGREDIENTS

But blocking body odor isn't enough when it comes to making a Natural Deodorant effective. Unlike antiperspirants, which block your sweat glands- when using Natural Deodorant you will experience some moisture!

This is why we add Clays: to absorb that natural moisture found in your precious pits.

Here's where our customization options truly shine! You can choose which clay you'd prefer us to make your deodorant with, which means you can adjust how absorbent your formula is. French Clay Green absorbs at least double the moisture that Kaolin does- making your two options very distinct.

For maximum absorption, we suggest going with French Green Clay. This works well for deeper skin tones too, if you'd like to avoid the white residue usually left by most natural deodorants. 

For sensitive skin and more mild absorption (that's still ultra effective), we suggest picking Kaolin clay as your absorbing ingredient.

OUR FRAGRANT INGREDIENTS

Laslty- after reducing bacteria causing odor and absorbing excess moisture- our Natural Deodorant stick works to deliver a pleasant, fragrant odor in order to cover up any residual B.O (unlikely, but it happens!)

We use in-house blends of 100% essential oils to mask any residual odor, or go for our "Fragrance Free" option if you have especially sensitive skin.

Our Other Ingredients

If you've browsed our full ingredient list, you may find some ingredients we haven't spoken about above, so let's get into it!

Here's our basic ingredient list:

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Farnesene (Squalane Light), Cetyl Alcohol, Magnesium Hydroxide, Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot) Root Powder, Candelilla Cera (Candelilla Wax), Zinc Ricinoleate, Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

We've spoken about the Magnesium Hydroxide, Arrowroot Powder, Zinc Ricinoleate and Fragrances- but what about the other ingredients in Bold?

Well, when formulating our deodorant, of course we wanted it to work as well (if not better) than an antiperspirant- but we ALSO wanted it to be easy to apply!

That's where Oils, butters, waxes and fatty alcohols come it: these are added to create a convenient Deo stick for easy application!

FUN FACT: We used an EXTREMELY lightweight, lighting-fast absorbing oil- Squalane Light (derived from Sugarcane)- to ensure the other ingredients are delivered without any stain-creating, oily residue.

Then we add Vitamin E to prevent the oils, butters and waxes from becoming rancid and voila. That's pretty much how our ingredient list works.
